Young Mothers Project
THE CONTEXT IN WHICH WE OPERATE
Women are subject to severe discrimination: from an early age, they experience situations of marginalization and abuse. Today, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the situation has further worsened with the increase in early pregnancies among young girls, caused by long periods of isolation in villages and the impossibility of attending school, which represents a safe and protective environment.
Sudden pregnancy forces girls to interrupt their education, and reintegration into school is extremely difficult. In addition to the challenges related to caring for a child, new economic needs arise and must be prioritized.
Adolescent motherhood has a negative impact on education: making up for lost months, limited financial resources, and the lack of medical and psychological support during pregnancy and early childhood represent insurmountable barriers for young girls, who are often alone.
Good Samaritan aims to give the identified beneficiaries the opportunity to:
- complete the educational path that was interrupted due to pregnancy; attend apprenticeship courses and receive specific training in small business management and food security, which are essential for managing daily life;
- receive psychological support from specialized professionals, along with ongoing guidance from the staff of Comboni Samaritans of Gulu, who are always ready to listen and help find solutions;
- be provided with work tools and financial support to start income-generating activities;
- cover medical and food expenses, which are crucial for the care of the child.
This support will allow young mothers to focus on their education without the burden of independently meeting their own needs and those of their children.
Over the years, the Young Mothers Project has been supported by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and by Fondazione Zanetti.
